Chapter 13

FROM THE BACK of the Academy auditorium, Lisel had sat and watched Ian give a lesson on the possible threats terrorists might employ. She'd been dumbfounded as he discussed biological, chemical, and radiological agents that could be used against the United States. It chilled her when he discussed another plague and other diseases that could be unleashed on the U.S. population.

"He's a pretty good teacher, isn't he?" Rick commented to her just as the presentation ended.

"Um, yes, he's very good." Actually he'd been brilliant. She was mesmerized watching him work the audience. Especially when the guys had gotten nervous about the subject matter. She'd been right, he could help save the world with his knowledge.

Rick nodded to the stage. "Sorry you were usurped up there." Someone had gotten room usage mixed up, and when Lisel arrived for rehearsal, Ian had been teaching his class in the auditorium.

"I didn't mind."

"Yeah, I could tell that."

She turned in her seat to face Rick. He was really a handsome man, especially when he was smiling mischievously, like now. "Are you making a comment here, Mr. Ruscio?"

He laughed. "Yeah, Ms. Loring, I guess I am." He shook his head. "Your feelings for that guy are written all over you face."

"Oh, Lord, I hope not."

"He's gotta have a screw loose not wanting what you're offering."

She chuckled. "Thanks." She studied him. He looked tired. "Is the young teacher you're assigned to at the preschool making you lose sleep these days?"

Briefly, he closed his eyes. "She's scrambled my brains is what she's done. You know, I don't get women."

"Well, I don't get men. Maybe we can enlighten each other."

Again a grin.

"What's she done?"

"She hasn't a clue what's good for her."

"You want a relationship with her and she isn't buying?"

"Hell no."

"Ah, just the opposite." Lisel scowled. "Why aren't you buying, Rick?"

"She's Little Miss Innocent. I'm The Big Bad Wolf."

"How old is she?"

"Twenty-seven."

"Old enough to know her own mind."

"Tell me about it. I just get her where I want her, and she pulls the rug out from under me."

"You know, you and our instructor up there are a lot alike."

"How?"

"He thinks it's in my best interest to stay away from me, too." She stared hard at Ian. "I'm in love with him."

Rick whistled. "I didn't know it had gone that far."

"And I'm pissed as hell at him."

"I could tell that. What'd he do?"

"He started dating someone else after he told me he wasn't interested in dating at all."

"She must not mean anything to him, then."

"Why do you say that?"

"She's probably safe, so he can enjoy her company and not worry about getting involved. You probably terrify him."

"Does Little Miss Innocent terrify you?"

The humor left his face. "Yeah, she scares the shit out of me." He glanced at the stage. "He's coming down here. Want me to head him off like I did the other night?"

"No." She stood. "I think I'll go scare the daylights out of him."

Rick laughed, and Lisel sidled out into the aisle.

Ian rolled up to her. His captain's shirt stretched across his chest, outlining his gorgeous pecs.
